baby shower

It is a long-standing tradition to mark the occasion of a new arrival with celebrations and undoubtedly one of the most joyful occasions for gift-giving!

Originally an American tradition, baby showers have increased in popularity all over the world, although in some places the party is not celebrated until the baby is born as this is considered bad luck. By convention, the purpose of a baby shower is to help parents get the things they need for their baby, such as clothing and toys, and to celebrate the event.

Baby shower traditions are fast-changing: while it was originally a women-only social gathering (and still is in some places, such as Latin America), it is now very common to have both genders attend the celebration. Also, baby showers used to be given only for a family's first child, but these days they are also held for subsequent or adopted children.

Usually the shower is given for the expected parents by someone else, as opposed to the parents hosting it. This person is often the mother's maid of honour or the bridesmaids. As there are no rules as to when, where or how baby showers are to be held, this is purely a question of personal preference of the parents-to-be.
